These words by Gérard Schneider resonate profoundly with the essence of my collection, "CHROMATIC FANTASIAE".

Inspired by the creativity and improvisational rhythm of jazz, this collection serves as a score where colors dance and harmonize to create a visual and emotional symphony.

Inspiration For The Collection

For me, painting is a language in its own right, one that takes form in the musicality of things. It imposes its own rhythm, its own movement, weaving themes in cadence until achieving a sense of harmony. Painting is akin to music in its ability to evoke deep emotions without words.

Perhaps that’s why "CHROMATIC FANTASIAE" echoes Bach’s "Chromatic Fantasias". Like a musical composition, this collection explores tones and rhythms but finds its energy in jazz improvisation, with its ruptures, variations, and moments of intense spontaneity.

If my paintings could produce sound, their music would be both soft and provocative, inventive yet instinctive, mastered yet improvised around central themes. They would also carry messages - a complex music, deceptively simple. For when you think you’ve deciphered an image, glimpsed a symbol, understood the painting’s meaning, you turn it around… and new images emerge. You never know what themes will unfold by the end of the melody or which color will define the piece being played.

Each canvas narrates a colorful melody that evolves with every brushstroke and inspired gesture. The colors, like notes, settle, vibrate, and resonate, creating unexpected chords and shifting harmonies.

The Symbolism of Colors and Movement

In Chromatic Fantasiae, each color has its own resonance, but it is their interaction that creates true magic. Like in jazz, vivid and contrasting hues respond to, complement, or challenge one another, giving rise to dynamic and vibrant energy.

• Colors: They act as notes on a score, each bringing a distinct emotion. Intense reds evoke passion, deep blues serenity, while yellows and oranges suggest joy and communicative energy.
• Movement: Spontaneous gestures and layered textures mirror the syncopated, unpredictable rhythm of life. Raw brushstrokes and rich textures capture the intensity of fleeting moments offered to us in our earthly existence.

Each painting is a sensory experience, an invitation to lose oneself in a whirlwind of shades and forms. Like musical improvisation, it’s not about seeking a figurative representation but about feeling the raw emotion and energy radiating from the composition.

Artistic Techniques: A Score of Colors

The creation of "CHROMATIC FANTASIAE" is rooted in an intuitive and spontaneous approach. Colors are applied directly to the canvas, without pre-mixing on a palette, through free and often instant gestures to capture a precise emotion at each note I hear. In fact, I cannot paint without music, and jazz fills my mind with infinite shapes and colors, like synesthetic visions: green for high, piercing sounds, warm tones for softer notes or guttural voices.

For example, my painting The Nest is directly inspired by Ella Fitzgerald’s Lullabies of Birdland.

The layering, splashes, and textures enrich the composition, giving each canvas unique depth and dynamism.

As in jazz, improvisation plays a central role. Choices of colors and forms evolve as I paint, creating a work that takes shape in real time, driven by inspiration. This approach imbues each painting with a unique vitality, a kind of visual performance frozen in time.

It reflects a broader contemplation of how abstract art can touch the soul directly, bypassing the filters of figurative representation. As Gérard Schneider said, "What matters is not to see abstraction, but to feel it."

My paintings invite active contemplation, encouraging viewers to let the colors and movements resonate with their own emotions. They remind us that beauty and harmony often emerge from the unexpected, from the dissonances that eventually form a new melody.

My "CHROMATIC FANTASIAE" collection celebrates the raw energy of creation and the magic of interactions between colors. It invites a sensory journey, where each painting becomes a stage in a broader visual melody.

In this pictorial score, viewers are invited to feel, dream, and let themselves be carried by the rhythm of colors. As in music, every work can be interpreted differently depending on the state of mind of the beholder.

For colors to resonate together, they must vibrate and "swing" across the canvas, like notes settling, intertwining, and harmonizing on the score of life. If my painting combines color and gesture in a raw, almost instinctive manner, it is because I seek to make it vivid enough to attune all the senses.

I hope this collection brings each viewer joy, even if only the joy of living each moment with all their heart, as if it were their last - and the desire to embrace the "emotional vertigo" that only abstraction can offer.
