There are departures that already feel like memories. In this painting, something seems to be gently drifting away—whether it’s a boat leaving the shore, a land fading into the horizon, or simply a moment slipping away with time, we cannot tell. The entire composition rests on this delicate ambiguity. At the center, a white shape rises like a sail filled with a last breath of wind. Surrounding it, shades of gold, red, and purple form a shifting architecture—almost an imaginary port city—while the turquoise blue of the sea occupies a large part of the canvas with a deceptive calmness. For beneath this apparent tranquility, everything is in motion. The colors extend downward into uncertain reflections, as if the sea refuses to keep a perfect image of what it receives. It transforms, stretches, erases. What exists above its surface becomes something else the moment it is mirrored there. Some colors grow more intense, others fade away; what once seemed essential sometimes disappears, while an insignificant detail lingers with extraordinary clarity. Here, the sea becomes the liquid memory of existence. On the horizon, warm colors suggest a land still bathed in light. Is it the place the traveler has just left? The one towards which they are heading? Or a memory of a place that no longer exists except within them? The painting offers no answer. It simply lets the sail continue its movement. And this white sail—fragile yet luminous—might be what each of us carries when we truly set out to sea: a few memories, some hopes, a few wounds—everything that makes up that invisible cargo with which we cross through life. For leaving never means abandoning everything. We carry our shores with us. And long after they have vanished beyond the horizon, their light continues to reflect in our wake.
