The story behind
In this painting, the white sails rise like suspended prayers, yet the surrounding darkness recalls the shadow of disobedience. Bursting colors, mixing fiery reds and flashes of turquoise, express the inner turmoil of Jonah fleeing the divine call. The vessel seems to merge with a gaping mouth, half-ship, half-whale, symbol of the destiny that swallows those who turn from their mission. Yet light persists in the distance: a reflection of mercy, waiting to lift up the one who chooses to return. Here, the sea becomes both judge and refuge, stage of the trial that transforms. Flight leads to storm, storm to repentance, and repentance to the conversion of an entire people. This painting reminds us that our refusals and detours are not without fruit: they may open paths we never imagined. And could it be that even our wanderings are woven into the mysterious design of the Creator?
