In this painting, the sea is no longer just a landscape. Shapes open up, unfold, and overlap like gigantic petals, while at the center of the composition emerges a strange red form surrounded by white rays. One might see it as a lighthouse invented by the sailor’s imagination when no land is yet in sight. For when you’ve been sailing for a long time, sometimes you have to create the light yourself to keep moving forward. Around this red core, greens and blues retain the full depth of the sea, while whites, yellows, and reds seem to herald a new energy. The storm hasn’t completely passed, but something has transformed. What once threatened becomes motion. What once confused turns into direction. What once seemed like chaos begins to trace a path across the water. Perhaps this is one of the sea’s great lessons: it teaches us that we won’t always find a lighthouse just when we need one. So sometimes, we have to look elsewhere. Because after searching long and hard for a light on the horizon, the traveler sometimes makes an essential discovery: the lighthouse they were waiting for may have been within them all along.
