The story behind
Between sky and sea, suspended in the fragile instant of elevation, the Alcyon unfurls its wings, trembling with a breath of freedom. This bird, adorned in shades of turquoise and cadmium yellow, emerging from an intense red backdrop, is not merely a winged figure - it is the symbol of departure, of a quest, of an inevitable renewal.
Inspired by Greek mythology, this work evokes the halcyon, the legendary bird that built its nest upon the fickle waves. But in its shifting cradle, nothing held, nothing remained. With each wave, with each tempest, the halcyon was forced to begin again, to rebuild, to face the inconstancy of the world. In time, it sought to escape its fate, to rise, to seek elsewhere a place where it might finally lay its nest.
On the canvas, the bird takes flight toward the right - toward the future - leaving behind the uncertainty of the past. Its body carries within it the memory of water, for it was born of the sea, shaped by its surges, by its ceaseless upheavals. The blue of its feathers mirrors the waves, the yellow evokes the light of a new day. And yet, the deep red background, uniform and intense, serves as a reminder that every ascent is accompanied by an inner fire: it is both the source of life and the trial by fire, the force that propels and the specter of annihilation.
For life itself is a restless sea, an endless cycle of rebuilding, of surges and falls. Nothing is ever truly secured, nothing is ever permanent. Each wave dismantles what we believed to be stable, each wind scatters our certainties.
My painting “The Flight of Alcyon” is more than a mere ascent - it is a necessity: the imperative to begin again, to adapt, to transform loss into motion, trials into transcendence.
This painting is a metaphor for the human journey, for that silent struggle between attachment and transcendence, between what we build and what fate erodes. It reminds us that the only true stability is the one we carry within, in the strength of our wings, in the courage to always dare a new flight.
Thus, “The Flight of Alcyon” is not an escape but a promise. A promise that, despite the tempests, another horizon is always possible. That we can be reborn from every wave and, from the world's uncertainty, carve a path to ascension.
