Quintessence (1380)

In this painting, the universe seems to plunge into the depths of its own mystery. Cell-like forms, resembling atoms, cluster together in dark groups of green, brown, and purple, as if matter itself is striving to organize and distinguish itself. At the center, a bright yellow line stretches out like a root of light, cutting through the layers and connecting the bottom to the top, shadow to clarity. Surrounding it, shades of turquoise and gold spread like sparks of hope within this dense mixture. One might see here the germination of the earliest complex organisms—a crucial step in the grand story of life. Yet the prevailing feeling is one of an unfathomable and wondrous mystery that leaves one dizzy: what if, at the moment of birth, each cell already carried the imprint of infinite eternity?
