Quintessence (1653)

In this painting, two vast forces seem to meet. One descends. The other rises. And their encounter creates light. The upper left area is dominated by a broad expanse of pale blue, turquoise, and white. It flows almost vertically down from the top edge in long, translucent streaks. In some places, a cellular structure appears, resembling foam trapped in ice. This region feels both airy and aquatic at once. But near the upper center, the color suddenly deepens. A long mass of midnight blue, green, and gold descends diagonally. It folds back on itself in thick, almost mineral-like forms before merging into the heart of the composition. To the right, the scene changes. Gray-greens, turquoises, and whites meet striking networks of orange and gold. Near the right edge, a glowing yellow area seems enclosed within a lacework of red and orange cells. This is the first source of heat. The second arises from below. From the bottom edge, a vast light of yellow, white, and orange climbs upward. It resembles a flame, or a solar substance rising from the depths. At its center stands a very distinctive red form, edged in white, appearing to rise like the tip of a fire toward the blue masses above. Around it, droplets of orange and red paint accompany this ascent. So the meeting takes place almost exactly at the canvas’s center. Blue moves down. Yellow moves up. Between them, turquoise, green, red, and gold blend into an intensely dense zone of transformation. Yet no color, no element, seems to conquer. The cold does not extinguish the fire.
