Quintessence (1722)

This painting immediately establishes a deep and silent atmosphere. Shades of blue and violet dominate the upper portion, shaping a dense space where the substance appears alternately fluid and ethereal. Cellular-like areas disrupt certain surfaces, as if the color reveals its most intimate structure. Within these depths, numerous white specks emerge. Their scattered presence evokes a sense of vast space and distance, yet never allows for a clear understanding of what they truly represent. Below them, a large greenish form rises at the center of the composition. It seems to emerge from the blue, then curves and extends towards the right. This shape serves as one of the painting’s main movements. Surrounding it, hues merge into long undulations where blue, green, red, and orange converse without fully blending. The lower section gradually takes on a more earthly tone. Greens darken, ochres appear, and a long orange pulse runs through the whole like a line of energy. On the left, bursts of brighter colors emerge from this depth, bringing an unexpected warmth to the predominantly cool palette. The eye hesitates between sky, sea, terrain, or cosmos. The white dots might be either foam or stars, and the large colored masses suggest waves as much as imaginary continents. This ambiguity is precisely what gives the composition its strength. Each form lingers on the threshold of multiple possible meanings. The painting does not depict any particular landscape, yet it conveys the sensation of an immense universe—a world of which we glimpse only a fragment, captured at the moment when matter, light, and space fuse into a single entity.
