Ether Wake

Something has just crossed the sky. Not a celestial body we could name, nor a comet whose trajectory astronomers might calculate, but a more elusive presence, leaving behind nothing but a luminous trace. This painting seems to capture that mysterious instant when a passage disturbs the supposed stillness of the universe. At the centre of the composition, a white, almost pearlescent light unfolds in an ascending movement. It travels through turquoise, gold and pink like a silent breath, while the deep browns surrounding the scene lend the apparition its intensity. The painting evokes not so much a celestial landscape as a memory of the sky. As though something had been there only moments before, and cosmic matter still retained its imprint. The countless white sparks scattered throughout the composition then resemble fragments of a vanished presence, stardust or particles from a world of which we have glimpsed only the wake. The word “ether” adds an almost philosophical dimension to this vision. Once imagined as an invisible substance filling the celestial realms, it now belongs more readily to the territory of poetry than to that of science. It beautifully describes that intangible space in which imagination may still invent what reason cannot grasp. In this work, light itself never seems entirely material. It appears, fades and transforms. Colours overlap like translucent veils, creating the impression that several realities coexist within the same space. Perhaps this is precisely what we contemplate whenever we look at the sky: not only what exists, but also what once existed. For the light of stars sometimes travels for thousands or millions of years before reaching us. To look into the universe is therefore, in a sense, always to look into the past. This ”ether wake” could thus be the poetic trace of something that is already gone. A light that departed long ago, yet continues its journey. A memory cast into infinity. And perhaps one of the sky’s most beautiful promises: that certain presences can continue to reach us long after they have disappeared.
