Off The Coast

There comes a moment when, while sailing on the ocean, the coastline disappears. You turn back one last time, and behind you, there’s nothing left but a faint line, soon swallowed by the horizon. Ahead, the sea. All around, the sea. And suddenly, the undeniable truth: from now on, you must move forward. This symbolic painting seems to capture that exact instant when several sailboats set off into the same space, each following a different course. Their sails, raised high, fill almost the entire canvas—slender like flames or wings. They brush past one another, respond in kind, sometimes appear to merge, yet each retains its own direction, color, and motion. Perhaps this is how we move through life. We set out surrounded by others. Some sail alongside us for a long time. Others merely cross our path briefly. A few slip beyond the horizon, yet mysteriously remain within our inner landscape. Because being together doesn’t mean following the same path. In this painting, the sailboats seem united by the wind more than by any destination. This invisible force filling their sails could represent love, time, or simply life itself: something beyond our full control that we must learn to navigate. We can adjust our sails, but we can never command the wind! The vast expanses of blue intensify this feeling of freedom—and vulnerability. And maybe this is the heart of the painting: we must move forward! Not despite uncertainty, but alongside it. Accepting that we don’t always know the destination. Accepting that our travel companions will change, that some boats will sail off in different directions, that the wind will shift, and that our own desires may one day carry us toward a horizon we never imagined. Setting out to sea becomes much more than just a departure. It is a willingness to live without demanding that life reveal its map. It is choosing the vast, uncertain open sea over the safety of a harbor where we no longer wish to stay.
