Quintessence (1091)

A striking confrontation takes place in this painting: to the left, reds and golds blaze like a land of molten lava—scorching and fertile; to the right, blues unfurl in aquatic scales, as if oceans are taking shape. These two forces oppose and collide, yet also echo each other, weaving an intricate network of uncertain frontiers where matter seeks its balance. Purples and golden highlights spring forth at these points of contact, the unexpected fruit of this encounter. Here, fire and water do not cancel one another out: they unite to bring forth a new world. One might almost hear the crack of a cooling earth’s crust, the whisper of the first waves as they caress it.
