Quintessence (1188)

In this painting, shapes of colour collide like continents taking shape: the deep blues conjure oceans in the making, while the blazing golds and oranges recall the subterranean fires of volcanoes. Between them, networks of browns and ochres trace telluric veins, as if a terrestrial crust were in the process of solidifying. It is as though the canvas captures that fleeting instant when muddy, burning chaos begins to assume form: the birth of mountains, seas, and valleys. This is not yet the gentleness of a habitable world, but rather the creative turmoil of a newborn planet. Within this struggle between fire and water, between rock and light, a promise emerges: that of a ground where, one day, the seeds of life might take root.
