THE STORY BEHIND
Introduction
"Let us dream of evanescence and surrender to the wild beauty of things."
Okakura Kakuzo
My collection invites us to explore the transient, the impermanent, and the fragile beauty of life. It revolves around the theme of wind in its spiritual sense - an invisible, elusive force that blows freely and unpredictably.
Each painting seeks to transcend the limits of the physical world, with omnipresent vertical movements symbolizing an ascent toward a more spiritual dimension. "EVANESCENCE" is an ode to life, as precious as it is fleeting - a homage to light and emotion.
Inspiration For The Collection
What a strange thing life is: born in a breath, extinguished in a sigh. Between these two extremes, could all be but “wind” and illusion, everything destined to vanish before dissolving into smoke?
Air, the intangible, omnipresent wind - blowing where it wills - serves as the guiding thread of this collection. It sings of impermanence and celebrates the fragile, and therefore beautiful, nature of life itself.
This fragility and freedom are embodied in the wind, which becomes a metaphor for impermanence, reminding us that every moment is precious—a fleeting spark to cherish before it fades away.
Inspired by Alphonse de Lamartine’s poem Le Lac, this collection carries within it a luminous melancholy:
"Thus always pushed toward new shores,
Into eternal night, swept away with no return,
Shall we never, upon time’s vast ocean,
Anchor for a single day?
(...)
Oh time, suspend your flight! And you, favorable hours,
Suspend your course!
Let us savor the fleeting delights
Of our most beautiful days!
(...)
Let us love, let us love! And seize the fleeting hour;
Man has no port, and time no shore;
It flows, and we pass!"
My paintings express this longing to capture the present moment, to grasp life’s beauty despite its elusive nature.
Life, so often described in sweeping terms, I paint from bottom to top. In each of my works, vertical movements are constant, as though my art seeks to defy gravity.
When I paint, as in life, though my head may be in the clouds chasing dreams of the infinite, my feet remain firmly anchored to the tangible reality below. Painting fills the void, stretching like a rope between earth and sky. Even knowing it may snap, I feel torn between a life I dream of, far above, and the one here below that I am bound to live.
Perhaps that is why my brushstrokes - sharp, rapid lines like the tracings of an electrocardiogram - oscillate ceaselessly between north and south, heaven and earth. Just as life is composed of ups and downs, harmony must arise from the union of these opposites.
Symbolic and Poetic Dimensions
In my collection "EVANESCENCE", each painting is a dialogue between heaven and earth, matter and energy. The recurring vertical movements evoke the tension between terrestrial gravity and the desire for transcendence. These ascending lines reflect the soul’s journey, striving to rise beyond physical confines.
Reflections on water, omnipresent in the collection, add a contemplative dimension. Inspired by Jean de La Fontaine’s “thinking reeds” - fragile yet resilient - the slender forms in my work symbolize strength in fragility: the ability to bend without breaking. These reeds also resemble stylized feathers, paying homage to both nature and artistic creation.
Each painting is a visual metaphor: life as a watercolor wash, a layering of light and transparency, where every stroke and cascading color reveals a fleeting emotion. The hues, borrowed from the rainbow, form an optimistic hymn to beauty despite impermanence.
Artistic Technique: Materializing Evanescence
My "EVANESCENCE" collection is built upon a delicate balance between substance and lightness. Though rooted in textured work to create volume, each canvas retains an airy, watercolor-like quality, as though pigments floated in the air.
This approach lightens the material, evoking a sense of weightlessness.
The choice of tones and textures is crucial: luminous whites mingle with pastel shades and intense hues, while flowing colors recall the ephemeral nature of a passing shower.
Each painting becomes a silent dialogue between shadows and light, capturing the moment where an emotion is born and fades away.
Philosophical Resonances
This collection reflects my vision of life: a perpetual tension between dreams and reality. For me, painting is an attempt to bridge a gap, to forge a connection between the tangible and the intangible.
My vertical brushstrokes, often swift and deliberate, symbolize a quest—to link the ephemeral with the eternal, to imbue fleeting things with meaning.
My collection of paintings "EVANESCENCE" also raises existential questions: how can we find harmony between opposites? How can we appreciate the beauty of the present moment while accepting its transience?
These questions translate visually into oscillations between north and south, between spiritual heights and earthly grounding. These movements, akin to the rhythms of an electrocardiogram, symbolize the pulse of life.
An Ode to Light and Life
Ultimately, "EVANESCENCE" is a romantic collection in the literary sense but devoid of despair. Full of color and movement, it celebrates life in all its dimensions - fragility, beauty, and light - and invites us to live each moment with intensity.
The trails of color on my canvases are not tears but bursts of hope, sparks of joy captured on the surface. They whisper a mantra I have long embraced: Carpe Diem!
Thus, each painting becomes a visual meditation on impermanence, an attempt to lift the soul beyond earthly constraints while remaining firmly rooted in the reality of matter. For though time marches on, life takes flight. And it is precisely this fleeting quality that makes it so precious.
